I remember working as a kitchen porter at Bognor Regis during the opening Easter period in the year of the mod and rocker clashes. We felt safe inside the camp but when we ventured out, we wore our work clothes to make sure that nobody mistook us for the opposition.
The workers were alloted chalets in the older section of the camp and I remember that the wash-rooms were in a very insanitory state. I found one working toilet and put up an 'Out of Order' signed to save it for myself.
During the first few days, many of the campers were disgruntled because nothing appeared to be open. I could tell another tale about the kitchen conditions but this would not be believed!
The Butlins Camp of today sets a far higher standard but from my 'behind the scenes' experience, back in the sixties, I would never choose to go there today.
